Mapping tribal Lands

The Native Land Map aims to map Indigenous territories, treaties, and languages across the world in a way that goes beyond colonial ways of thinking in order to better represent how Indigenous people want to see themselves.

Though not meant for legal or academic use, the Native Land map is a great tool for personal reckoning. Try it. Go to the map and toggle on “Territories” and “Languages.” Zoom out until you can see the entire Western Hemisphere and de-select “Settler Labels” in the lower right. It is truly stunning to observe the web of nations, cultures, languages across the land. Many of us were raised with the notion that the continents of the Americas were sparsely populated, wild open lands. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The more we pause, consider, ask questions, listen to our Indigenous neighbors, or literally dig beneath our feet - the more we learn of the complexity of civilizations, societies, peoples who stewarded this land.
